At Hanging Wood, we design and build practical, small-scale systems to support independent, off-grid living. All our self-sufficiency products are inspired by the way we run our own woodland farm — completely off-grid and powered by the land itself.

Our compost loos are simple, low-impact systems designed and built onsite. They use urine separators that drain into containers, while solid waste is collected for composting — turning what’s usually seen as waste into a valuable resource for soil health.

Our 12V off-grid power systems provide dependable electricity for small spaces, workshops, and woodland setups. Each system includes solar panels, batteries, controllers, and connectors, offering an easy way to generate and store your own power without mains electricity.

We also produce the Johnson–Su composter, a low-maintenance aerobic composting system that transforms organic material into rich, microbially active compost. It’s ideal for regenerative gardening and soil improvement, helping close the nutrient loop naturally.

Our rainwater harvesting and cleaning system uses IBC tanks, a 12V pump, paper filters, and a carbon filter to provide clean, non-potable water for washing, irrigation, and general off-grid use — a simple, effective way to make the most of natural rainfall.
