A no-turn, fungal-dominant compost system for regenerative growing
The Johnson–Su Bioreactor is a durable, easy-to-use composting unit designed to produce high-quality, biologically rich compost without turning or electricity.
Based on the original Johnson–Su design developed at New Mexico State University, this model is adapted for the UK climate and woodland materials — leaves, chipped wood, nettles, and other natural feedstocks.
Each unit is built from 4 mm Galfan-coated welded mesh with 75 mm square apertures, forming a strong 1 m × 1 m × 1 m frame. The interior is lined with heavy-duty non-woven weed-suppressant fabric to retain moisture and prevent loss of fine material while maintaining airflow.
Six removable vertical aeration pipes (Ø 75 mm) ensure perfect oxygenation during the first 24 hours. Once withdrawn, they leave open air channels that sustain aerobic, fungal-dominant composting throughout the year.
A toggle-fastened breathable cover keeps the contents moist, shaded, and protected from rain and wildlife.
