🍂 8L Dried Sweet Chestnut Leaf Litter – Extra Large Natural Leaves

Natural dried Sweet Chestnut leaves, hand gathered from our woodland on the North Downs in Surrey.

Sweet Chestnut produces particularly large, long leaves – often considerably bigger than our Oak and Beech leaf litter – making them ideal for creating substantial natural ground cover, hiding places and woodland texture in bioactive and naturalistic enclosures.

Each order contains approximately 6 litres of naturally dried Sweet Chestnut leaves.

🦎 Ideal for Bioactive Enclosures

Sweet Chestnut leaf litter can be used in suitable setups for:

  • Reptiles
  • Isopods
  • Springtails
  • Woodlice
  • Millipedes
  • Insects
  • Other invertebrates
  • Bioactive vivariums
  • Terrariums
  • Naturalistic enclosures

The large leaves create visual barriers, ground cover and hiding spaces, while giving an enclosure a much more natural woodland-floor appearance.

🍂 Extra Large Leaves

One of the main advantages of Sweet Chestnut is the size of its leaves.

They are typically much larger than our Oak or Beech leaves, creating larger overlapping layers and spaces beneath the leaf litter.

This makes Sweet Chestnut particularly useful where you want a deeper-looking, more structural woodland floor rather than very fine leaf litter.

🌱 Naturally Biodegradable

As leaf litter gradually decomposes, it becomes incorporated into the substrate and contributes organic material to a bioactive environment.

Decaying leaves can also provide material used by isopods, springtails and other detritivores, helping form part of the natural decomposition cycle within a suitable bioactive setup.

The rate at which the leaves break down will depend on humidity, temperature, substrate and the organisms present.

🌳 Wild-Gathered & Unsterilised

Our leaves are gathered directly from our woodland and allowed to dry naturally.

We do not sterilise, microwave or chemically treat our leaf litter.

This means it remains a genuinely natural woodland material and may contain small amounts of:

  • Soil or woodland debris
  • Other leaf species
  • Seeds
  • Tiny twigs
  • Lichen or moss fragments
  • Naturally occurring microorganisms or small invertebrates

Please inspect wild-gathered materials before introducing them to an animal enclosure and determine whether untreated leaf litter is appropriate for your particular species and setup.

Quantity

You will receive approximately 8 litres of dried Sweet Chestnut leaves.

Leaf size varies naturally, so the exact number of individual leaves will vary from bag to bag. For that reason, volume is a much more useful measure than promising 100 leaves.

Please Note

These are genuine woodland leaves rather than commercially processed substrate.

Expect natural variation in size, shape, colour, condition and degree of drying. Some leaves will break during packing and delivery, which is normal for dried leaf litter.

🍂 From Our Surrey Woodland

Our Sweet Chestnut leaves are gathered by hand from our family-managed woodland on the North Downs in Surrey.

No pesticides or insecticides are used on our land.

Naturally fallen. Hand gathered. Real woodland leaf litter. 🌿
