These plants grow naturally in our family-managed woodland on the North Downs in Surrey and are freshly lifted to order and supplied bare root with their bulbs and roots intact.

In spring, Wild Garlic creates beautiful carpets of fresh green leaves followed by clusters of delicate white star-shaped flowers – accompanied by its unmistakable fresh garlic aroma.

The amount of leaf growth you receive will depend heavily on the time of year.

🧄 Edible Wild Garlic

Wild Garlic has a fresh, distinctive garlic flavour that is generally milder than cultivated garlic cloves.

The young leaves are particularly popular in seasonal cooking and can be used for:

• Wild Garlic pesto
• Soups
• Salads
• Sauces
• Butters
• Dips
• Pasta dishes
• In place of spinach in suitable recipes

The flowers are also edible and make an attractive seasonal garnish.

The leaves are generally prized most before flowering, when they are young and tender.

🌳 A True Woodland Plant

Wild Garlic naturally thrives in the conditions found on a woodland floor and is particularly useful for shady and partially shaded areas where many conventional garden plants struggle.

It is suited to:

It generally prefers moist, fertile, humus-rich soil and can spread to form attractive colonies where conditions suit it.

🌼 Seasonal Growth

Wild Garlic is strongly seasonal.

Its fresh leaves emerge in late winter and spring, followed by its characteristic white flowers. The foliage then naturally dies back, with the underground bulbs remaining dormant until the following growing season.

Depending on when you order, plants may therefore arrive with lush green leaves, flowers, smaller emerging shoots or little/no visible foliage.

This is normal.

💧 Planting Your Wild Garlic

When your plants arrive:

1. Unpack them promptly.
2. Soak the roots if they appear dry.
3. Plant as soon as practical.
4. Position the bulbs/roots into moist prepared soil.
5. Water thoroughly.
6. Keep adequately watered while establishing.

For the most natural effect, Wild Garlic can be planted in groups beneath deciduous trees or in other suitably shaded garden areas.

⚠️ Important if Harvesting for Food

Only consume plants that you can positively identify as Wild Garlic (Allium ursinum).

Wild Garlic leaves can potentially be confused with poisonous plants growing in similar habitats, including Lily of the Valley and Lords-and-Ladies. Identification should never rely on one characteristic alone.

If you intend to eat plants from your garden, make sure you can identify them correctly before harvesting.

Our Wild Garlic grows naturally in our family-managed woodland on the North Downs in Surrey.

Plants are lifted in managed quantities from appropriate areas of the woodland rather than commercially nursery-grown.

No pesticides or insecticides are used on our land.

Hanging Wood has been managed by our family since 1976.
