A substantial selection of genuine natural flint, hand gathered from our family woodland on the North Downs in Surrey.

Flint is characteristic of the chalk landscape of southern England, where nodules occur naturally within the chalk geology beneath our woodland.

These pieces are supplied in their natural, unworked state, making them particularly interesting for flintknapping, lapidary work, primitive crafts, geology collections and historical or educational displays.

🔥 A Stone with Thousands of Years of History

Flint has been used by people in Britain for thousands of years.

When worked correctly, flint can fracture to produce extremely sharp edges, which allowed it historically to be shaped into cutting tools, scrapers, arrowheads and other implements.

Flint was also traditionally used with suitable materials to create sparks for fire lighting.

Today, raw flint remains popular with flintknappers, experimental archaeologists, bushcraft enthusiasts, craftspeople and collectors interested in traditional materials and skills.

Natural Raw Flint

Our flint isn't commercially shaped, polished or graded.

Individual pieces may have areas of pale natural cortex surrounding the darker flint beneath. Colours can range from grey and charcoal through to brown and almost black, with natural inclusions, markings and fractures.

Every piece is different.

Some stones may require breaking or preparation before they are suitable for a particular flintknapping or lapidary project.

⚠️ Working With Flint

Breaking or knapping flint can produce extremely sharp edges, flying fragments and fine silica-containing dust.

Suitable eye protection and other appropriate protective equipment should be used when cutting, breaking, grinding or knapping the stone. Work in a suitably ventilated environment and avoid breathing stone dust.

Children should only handle or work flint under appropriate adult supervision.

Please Note

You will receive approximately 4kg of flint similar in character to the pieces shown in the photographs, but natural variation should be expected.

Shape, size, colour, cortex, inclusions and suitability for individual projects will vary.

The flint is supplied as a natural raw material and geological specimen rather than as prepared or graded flintknapping blanks.

Our flint is gathered by hand in small quantities from our family woodland on the North Downs in Surrey, an area strongly associated with its underlying chalk and flint geology.
