🌳 400g 100% Pure Hardwood Wood Ash

Pure, natural hardwood wood ash produced from wood grown in our own Surrey woodland, carefully collected, hand sieved and packed ready for use.

Our ash contains no fillers, binders, coal, animal-derived ingredients or other added materials – just the mineral-rich ash remaining after burning natural hardwood.

Wood ash has been used traditionally for generations in gardening, composting and soapmaking, and a small amount can be useful anywhere an alkaline, mineral-rich natural material is required.

  • Produced from hardwood from our Surrey woodland
  • Hand sieved
  • No fillers or binders

🌱 Garden & Plant Care

Hardwood ash naturally contains potassium, calcium and smaller quantities of other mineral nutrients remaining after the wood has been burned.

It is also alkaline, so it can be used sparingly as a soil amendment where an increase in soil pH is appropriate.

Rather than simply spreading large quantities around plants, wood ash should be used carefully and according to the requirements of your soil.

A soil pH test is particularly useful before repeated application.

🪴 Soil pH

Wood ash can raise the pH of acidic soil, making it less acidic.

For this reason, avoid applying it around plants that prefer acidic conditions, such as:

  • Blueberries
  • Rhododendrons
  • Azaleas
  • Camellias
  • Other ericaceous plants

It should also not be assumed that every garden needs additional alkalinity.

♻️ Composting

Small quantities of hardwood ash can also be incorporated into a compost heap.

Because ash is concentrated and alkaline, a little goes a long way. Sprinkle small amounts through other composting materials rather than adding a thick layer of ash in one place.

🐌 Traditional Slug & Snail Deterrent

Dry wood ash is traditionally used as a physical barrier around vulnerable plants to discourage slugs and snails.

A light ring can be placed around plants, but its effectiveness is reduced considerably once the ash becomes wet and it may need replacing after rain.

We prefer describing it as a deterrent rather than a slug killer, as results will vary according to conditions.

🧼 Traditional Soapmaking

Wood ash has a very long history in traditional soapmaking.

Historically, water was passed through hardwood ash to produce an alkaline lye solution, which could then form part of traditional soapmaking processes.

Please note that making and handling lye involves strongly alkaline solutions and requires appropriate knowledge, protective equipment and safe procedures. This product is supplied as natural hardwood ash rather than prepared or standardised lye.

🌳 Why Hardwood?

The mineral composition of wood ash varies according to the tree species, growing conditions and combustion process.

Because ours is a genuine natural woodland product, we don't artificially standardise its mineral composition or add fertiliser ingredients to it.

This is simply real sieved hardwood ash from our own wood.

⚠️ Important Information

Wood ash is naturally alkaline.

Avoid breathing ash dust and avoid contact with eyes. Gloves are sensible when handling larger quantities.

Do not apply excessively to soil or plants. Keep dry until required and keep out of reach of children and pets.

Because this is a natural, unstandardised material, we don't provide a guaranteed NPK or pH value.

🌿 From Our Surrey Woodland

The hardwood used to produce our ash comes from our family-managed woodland on the North Downs in Surrey.

No pesticides or insecticides are used on our land, and our woodland materials are harvested in small quantities as part of our ongoing management.

Hanging Wood has been managed by our family since 1976.
