🌿 30 x 20cm Fresh Living Green Moss Carpet

A beautiful 30 x 20cm area of fresh, living woodland moss, hand gathered to order from our woodland on the North Downs in Surrey.

The moss is carefully lifted with some of its natural growing material beneath it, helping it remain together as a living green carpet that can be transferred into a suitable new environment.

This makes it particularly useful for covering larger areas in bonsai pots, terrariums, mossariums and miniature woodland landscapes.

You Will Receive

  • Approx. 30 x 20cm coverage of living green moss
  • Freshly gathered to order
  • Supplied with some of its natural growing material
  • Naturally occurring woodland moss species
  • Living, not dried or preserved
  • Untreated and unsterilised

🌱 Ideal For

  • Bonsai pots
  • Terrariums
  • Mossariums
  • Moss gardens
  • Miniature woodland landscapes
  • Natural plant displays
  • Fairy gardens
  • Botanical displays
  • Creating a living green ground layer

A Real Living Moss Carpet

Unlike dried or preserved decorative moss, this is genuine living moss.

The pieces are selected and lifted to retain the natural carpet-like growth, allowing them to be laid over a suitable moist surface. Individual pieces can also be gently separated, trimmed or arranged to suit the area you want to cover.

The moss may include species such as Tamarisk moss and Hair-pointed Feather-moss, together with other mosses naturally growing alongside them in the woodland.

This is not Sphagnum moss.

💧 Caring for Your Living Moss

Please unpack your moss as soon as it arrives.

Gently slide it from its bag, retaining the soil and natural material underneath where possible, and give it a good spray of water.

We recommend rainwater whenever possible, as we find our woodland moss generally performs much better with rainwater than tap water.

For continued growth:

  • Keep the moss moist
  • Position in a cool location
  • Provide natural or suitable growing light
  • Keep away from hot direct sunlight
  • Keep away from radiators and other heat sources
  • Provide some air circulation

Moss enjoys humidity, but it also needs to breathe, so avoid leaving it sealed in its delivery bag.

🌿 Using Moss with Bonsai

Living moss can create a beautiful, established appearance around a bonsai tree while covering exposed growing medium with a natural green surface.

Gently position pieces around the tree rather than burying the moss. Keep it adequately moist and adjust the position or watering according to the requirements of both your particular bonsai and the moss.

Completely Natural Woodland Moss

We do not sterilise, heat-treat or chemically treat our living moss, as doing so would kill it.

Because it comes directly from a living woodland environment, you may find other tiny plants, seeds, lichens, fungi or small invertebrates amongst the moss.

This is normal for genuinely living, untreated woodland material.

If you intend to introduce the moss into a controlled terrarium or an enclosure containing animals, please inspect it carefully first and decide whether untreated living material is appropriate for your particular setup.

Please Note

Living moss naturally varies according to the season, weather and growing location.

The moss you receive may therefore differ from the photographs in species mix, shade of green, density, height and texture.

It may also look somewhat flattened after delivery. Unpack it promptly, mist it with rainwater and return it to suitable cool, moist conditions.

🌳 From Our Surrey Woodland

Our moss is gathered by hand in small quantities from suitable areas of our woodland, taking care not to clear entire patches and allowing surrounding moss to continue growing and regenerate.

No pesticides or insecticides are used on our land.

Hanging Wood has been managed by our family since 1976 on the North Downs in Surrey.
