🍄 100cm Fresh Hardwood Log for Mushroom Growing & Inoculation

Grow mushrooms using a real freshly cut hardwood log from our own woodland on the North Downs in Surrey.

These substantial logs are approximately 100cm long and 8–12cm in diameter and are cut from suitable deciduous hardwood as part of our ongoing coppicing and woodland management.

They are supplied fresh and uninoculated, ready for you to prepare using the mushroom spawn, dowels or plugs of your choice.

Mushroom spawn, spores and inoculation plugs are NOT included.

🪵 You Will Receive

  • 1 x freshly cut hardwood log
  • Approx. 100cm long
  • Approx. 8–12cm diameter
  • Beech, Sycamore or Sweet Chestnut
  • Natural bark retained
  • Fresh, unseasoned timber
  • Grown and cut in Surrey
  • Uninoculated – spawn not included

The wood species supplied will depend on what is available through our woodland management and coppicing cycle.

🍄 Need Mushroom Spawn?

Mushroom spawn is not included with this log.

We work with Fat Fox Mushrooms, who supply mushroom plug/dowel spawn specifically for inoculating hardwood logs, along with growing instructions.

Choose mushroom spawn from Fat Fox Mushrooms

Select a mushroom variety suitable for the species of hardwood log you are using and follow the cultivation instructions supplied with your spawn.

🍄 Suitable for Mushroom Growing

Fresh deciduous hardwood logs are traditionally used for outdoor log cultivation of various wood-loving mushroom species.

Depending on the wood species, spawn and growing conditions, hardwood logs may be used for varieties such as:

  • Shiitake
  • Oyster mushrooms
  • Chestnut mushrooms
  • Nameko
  • Other suitable wood-growing mushroom species

Different mushroom species have their own preferred host woods and inoculation requirements, so please select suitable spawn for the wood species you receive and follow the instructions provided by your spawn supplier.

🌳 Freshly Cut for Inoculation

These aren't old firewood logs or commercially kiln-dried timber.

The log is supplied freshly cut, retaining the natural moisture within the wood and its intact bark.

Freshness is particularly important when purchasing timber specifically for mushroom cultivation, which is why we cut these logs from our own woodland rather than sourcing unknown timber from elsewhere.

As genuine fresh timber, the log will naturally begin to season after cutting. We therefore recommend planning your inoculation according to the instructions supplied with your chosen mushroom spawn.

🌱 Sustainably Coppiced Woodland Hardwood

The timber comes from Beech, Sycamore or Sweet Chestnut growing in our family-managed Surrey woodland.

Where appropriate, trees are managed through traditional coppicing, where stems are cut while the established stool and root system remain in place, allowing new stems to regenerate.

This means harvesting a log does not necessarily mean removing the whole living tree and root system.

Our woodland management aims to maintain a healthy mixture of trees, plants and habitats rather than simply producing timber.

Natural & Untreated

The logs are supplied as genuine woodland timber and are not kiln dried, chemically treated, sterilised or preserved.

Expect natural characteristics including:

  • Bark variation
  • Knots
  • Small bends
  • Lichen or moss
  • Natural staining
  • Changes in diameter
  • Occasional small branch points

Every mushroom log will therefore look slightly different.

⚠️ Important – Spawn Not Included

This listing is for the hardwood log only.

It does not include:

  • Mushroom spawn
  • Spores
  • Inoculated dowels or plugs
  • Wax
  • Drill bits
  • Inoculation tools

You will need to purchase a suitable mushroom spawn separately.

📏 Please Note

Because this is naturally grown timber, the dimensions are approximate.

Length: approx. 100cm
Diameter: approx. 8–12cm
Species: Beech, Sycamore or Sweet Chestnut depending on availability

The weight can also vary considerably according to species, diameter and natural moisture content.

🌿 From Our Surrey Woodland
