A collection of 10 living Wild Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioica) roots, lifted to order from our woodland on the North Downs in Surrey.

Often overlooked, the humble nettle is one of Britain's most valuable native plants. It provides food and habitat for numerous butterflies, moths and beneficial insects, while its young spring leaves have long been used as an edible wild plant.

Nettles are the food plant for the caterpillars of several beautiful British butterflies, including the Peacock, Small Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral and Comma. Growing a patch of nettles is one of the best ways to support these species in your garden.

🌱 Planting & Care

Remove the roots from their packaging as soon as they arrive and allow them to breathe. Soak the roots in water before planting.

Plant directly into ordinary garden soil in a sunny or partially shaded position. Nettles establish quickly from even small sections of root and will produce fresh shoots soon after planting.

The plants naturally die back in autumn and return each spring from the roots.

⚠️ Please Note

• Wear gloves when handling growing nettles, as the stems and leaves sting.
• The stems are cut back for transport and will regrow after planting.
• Nettles spread readily by underground rhizomes, so choose a location where their vigorous growth is welcome.
