A beautiful native woodland wildflower, Bugle (Ajuga reptans) forms low-growing leafy ground cover followed by distinctive spikes of blue-purple flowers.

These plants are dug fresh to order from our own woodland meadow on the North Downs in Surrey, rather than commercially propagated plug plants.

Bugle is particularly attractive for naturalistic planting, woodland gardens, wildflower lawns and areas where a spreading native ground-cover plant is wanted.

🌿 Excellent Natural Ground Cover

Bugle grows close to the ground and spreads using creeping runners, gradually creating attractive patches of foliage.

This makes it particularly useful for:

💜 Naturally Seasonal

Bugle is a hardy perennial, so its appearance changes considerably throughout the year.

Depending on the season in which you order, your plants may arrive with flowers, leafy growth, smaller emerging leaves or very little visible growth above the roots.

This is completely normal for a living perennial plant.

The plants establish and grow according to local weather, soil and growing conditions, with flowering typically occurring during spring and early summer.

Planting Your Bugle

Your plants will be packed to help retain moisture around the roots during delivery.

When they arrive:

1. Unpack them promptly and allow them to breathe.
2. If the roots appear dry, soak them in water before planting.
3. Plant into prepared soil at approximately the same depth at which they were previously growing.
4. Water thoroughly after planting.
5. Keep adequately watered while the plants establish.

Bugle generally enjoys moist but reasonably well-drained soil and can grow particularly well in partial shade, although it can tolerate a range of garden conditions.

🌱 A Spreading Plant

Bugle is valued as ground cover precisely because it can spread readily once established.

This is useful for naturalistic planting and covering bare ground, but gardeners wanting a very formal or tightly controlled border may wish to keep its spread in check.

These are real wild-grown plants, not uniform nursery-grown plugs.

Individual plants will naturally vary in size, root structure, leaf colour and amount of top growth. Their appearance also varies considerably according to the season.

Plants may become flattened or lose some leaves during delivery. This does not necessarily affect the roots or the plant's ability to establish.

Our Bugle grows naturally in our family-managed woodland and meadow areas on the North Downs in Surrey.

Plants are lifted in small quantities from selected areas as part of our ongoing management and work to maintain a varied mixture of woodland and meadow plants.
