🍓 10 x Wild Alpine Strawberry Bare Root Plants

A collection of 10 living Wild Strawberry plants, lifted to order from our woodland and meadow areas on the North Downs in Surrey.

Wild Strawberries are hardy perennial plants producing delicate white flowers followed by small, intensely flavoured red fruits. The fruits are much smaller than cultivated garden strawberries but have a wonderfully sweet, aromatic flavour.

They also make attractive low-growing natural ground cover, gradually spreading to form new plants.

You Will Receive

  • 10 x Wild Strawberry plants
  • Supplied bare rooted
  • Plants typically approx. 2–4 inches when in active growth
  • Lifted and packed shortly before dispatch
  • Roots packed to retain moisture during transit

🌱 Where to Plant

Our Wild Strawberries naturally grow in relatively unimproved soils across our land and do particularly well in chalky, clay and gravelly garden soil.

They are ideal for:

  • Sunny banks and verges
  • South-facing walls and borders
  • Gravel gardens
  • Woodland edges
  • Wildlife gardens
  • Natural ground cover
  • Informal cottage gardens
  • Edible and foraging gardens

They prefer full sun but will also grow in partial shade.

Planting & Care

Remove the plants from their packaging as soon as they arrive and allow them to breathe. Soak the roots in water before planting.

Plant directly into ordinary garden soil and firm the soil gently around the roots. Water thoroughly after planting and keep watered while the roots become established.

We do not recommend rich, loose shop-bought compost for these plants. They are accustomed to growing in natural garden soil, including the chalk, clay and stony ground found on our land.

🍓 Flowers & Fruit

Wild Strawberries produce small white flowers followed by miniature red strawberries. The fruit has a concentrated sweet, aromatic flavour and is delicious eaten fresh.

Once established, the plants spread naturally by runners, which root to form new plants and can eventually create an attractive low-growing patch.

Natural & Seasonal Plants

The appearance of your plants will depend on the time of year. Leaves, flowers and runners may wilt or become damaged during transportation, particularly in warm weather. Damaged top growth can be trimmed away and healthy roots should produce fresh growth once established.

Plants become less active or dormant during colder periods and return to active growth in spring.

🌿 Grown at Hanging Wood

Our Wild Strawberries grow naturally on our land and are lifted in small quantities as part of our ongoing woodland and meadow management.

No pesticides or insecticides are used on our land.

Hanging Wood has been managed by our family since 1976 on the North Downs in Surrey.
