Genuine natural chalk, hand gathered from our land on the North Downs in Surrey.

Our woodland sits on the characteristic chalk geology of the North Downs, and these are real pieces of naturally occurring chalk rather than manufactured blackboard chalk or processed calcium carbonate.

Each order contains approximately 1.5kg of natural chalk in 3–6 individual lumps.

🐌 Snails, Tortoises & Pet Enclosures

Natural chalk is primarily composed of calcium carbonate, which is why natural chalk is purchased by some of our customers for use with animals that require access to calcium.

Our chalk is particularly popular with keepers of:

• Land snails
• Giant African Land Snails
• Tortoises
• Other suitable invertebrates and pets

The solid lumps can be placed or prepared according to the requirements of the particular species.

Our chalk is natural, untreated North Downs chalk collected directly from our woodland. It is not a manufactured pet supplement and has not been laboratory analysed or formulated to provide a particular nutritional dose.

Pet owners should therefore decide whether natural chalk is appropriate for their particular species and husbandry setup.

🌸 Chalk & Hydrangeas

Natural chalk is predominantly calcium carbonate and can be used to increase the alkalinity of suitable garden soils.

Soil pH can influence flower colour in certain varieties of Hydrangea, with more alkaline conditions tending to favour pink rather than blue flowers.

Results depend on the Hydrangea variety and existing soil conditions, so adding chalk does not guarantee a particular flower colour. If using larger quantities in the garden, testing your soil pH first is sensible.

🎨 Natural Drawing & Carving Chalk

These natural lumps can also be used for experimental art, mark making and carving.

Because this is genuine geological chalk rather than manufactured drawing chalk, its hardness, texture and marking qualities naturally vary from piece to piece.

That variation can make it particularly interesting for traditional crafts, natural art and educational projects.

Traditional Household Uses

Chalk has a long history of household use, including absorbing grease and moisture.

Natural chalk can be experimented with for traditional household purposes, although it is not a formulated modern laundry or cleaning product. Always test it first on an inconspicuous area before using it on fabrics or other valuable surfaces.

🌱 Straight From the Woodland

Our chalk is collected in its natural state and is not washed, sterilised or chemically treated.

Depending on the season and weather, pieces may arrive with:

• Soil
• Moss
• Algae
• Natural staining
• Small pieces of plant material

This is normal for chalk gathered directly from the woodland environment.

If you prefer clean white chalk for a particular project, the surface can be soaked, gently scrubbed and allowed to dry thoroughly.
